How to Keep Your Koi Healthy During a UK Heatwave

When a summer heatwave strikes the UK, the biggest threat to your pond isn't the heat itself—koi are warm-season fish that actually thrive in higher temperatures. The real danger is a matter of physics: as water temperature rises, its capacity to hold dissolved oxygen drops significantly.

At 20°C, pond water holds about 9.1 mg/L of dissolved oxygen, but when the water hits 30°C, that capacity drops toward 7.5 mg/L. At the exact moment your pond is losing oxygen, your koi’s metabolism and appetite are peaking. This creates a dangerous "oxygen debt" that can quickly lead to stress or fatalities if not managed properly.

Key insight: Even a beautifully clear pond can become starved of oxygen overnight. Algae and plants that produce oxygen during the day switch to consuming it after dark, making nighttime the most vulnerable period for your fish.

4 Essential Heatwave Pond Care Rules

1. Maximise Aeration and Gas Exchange

Do not wait for your fish to start gasping at the surface. You need to aggressively off-gas carbon dioxide and introduce oxygen. This is where surface agitation is your best friend. Make sure air pumps are running 24/7, and consider adding extra diffusers.

The Apex Koi Solution: A custom polypropylene Bakki shower is incredibly efficient at stripping harmful gasses and super-saturating the water with oxygen. Combined with Pond Kinetics automated Air Flow Detector, you can ensure your aeration never silently fails when the fish need it most.

2. Adjust Your Feeding Strategy

Heavy feeding creates a heavy biological waste load, which consumes massive amounts of oxygen as your filter processes it.

  • Feed smaller portions 2–3 times a day.

  • If temperatures exceed 28°C, temporarily reduce feeding, as koi digestive systems struggle to process meals in extreme heat.

  • Never feed heavily late in the day to avoid exacerbating overnight oxygen drops.

3. Protect Your Biological Filtration

During a heatwave, your biological filter works overtime processing ammonia. Never sterilise or aggressively clean your biological media during an emergency.

To give your pond the best chance of handling the increased ammonia load, ensure your filter is packed with high-surface-area media. Our premium Bacteria Home logs provide the ultimate surface area for beneficial bacteria to thrive. Keep your mechanical stages clean to ensure unrestricted flow, but leave the biological stage alone to do its job.

4. Monitor Water Parameters Relentlessly

Test your water weekly, and even more frequently during extreme heat. Keep a close eye on:

  • Dissolved Oxygen: Aim for above 7 mg/L.

  • Ammonia and Nitrite: Both should read exactly 0 ppm.

The Apex Koi Solution: Manual testing can be tedious in the heat. Integrating a  Reactor Pro unit helps automate and manage the stability of your system, significantly reducing the manual burden of keeping your pond pristine.

Heatwave Mistakes: What NOT to Do

  • Don't add ice: Sudden temperature shocks are far more dangerous to koi than stable, warm water.

  • Don't do massive water changes: Replacing more than 30% of the water at once can shock the fish and crash your filter. Instead, stick to small 10–15% changes using dechlorinated water.

  • Don't panic: Keep the water moving, keep the air pumping, and manage the waste.
